Gatlinburg - Spring Done Right!

As spring bursts to life from the dormant winter still of the Smokies, imagine the lush new growth of the forest, wildflowers of all kinds, waterfalls of melted snow, and wildlife awakened to bask in the bounty of freshness. There's no better place to satisfy a case of spring fever than in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Gatlinburg knows its place in the mountains and strives to provide the visitor with a park-like feel along its streets and sidewalks, aided greatly by the full-time staff that oversees the City's year-round flower program.

“Visitors adore the fact that we have hanging baskets and window boxes filled to overflowing with healthy plants and flowers throughout the City,” says Janna Brien, horticulturist in charge of Gatlinburg's flower program. “In fact, we have visitors calling us frequently to ask about our flowers so that they can plant the same flowers when they get home.”

One of Gatlinburg's most popular flowers is the Mandevilla. “People go absolutely crazy over this pink trumpet-shaped flower,” said Brien, who grows Mandevillas year-round in the City's greenhouse. “We have Mandevillas that are nine and 10 years old,” she added.

Gatlinburg has been distinguished as a Tree City, U.S.A. for 16 years, placing it in a prestigious category with fewer than ten percent of cities in America. The City's Parks & Recreation Department initiated a Memorial Tree program during 2004 that includes the planting of a tree, installation of a bronze donation plaque, and lifetime maintenance and replacement guarantees. “Visitors and residents alike have found this program to provide a lasting memorial in a greatly loved community,” Brien concluded.
